Most of 2006

I will put in backlog eventually Sorry?

Cambridge Open Air 2005

Women's Epee: Jos 1st

An excellent performance in the two rounds of Poules saw Jos well place as 1st seed going into the DE. Nevertheless her draw seemed to give her  trick run of fights. She won her L8 fight 15 -1 in a great display of controlled fencing. Her semi final was not so straight forward and she had to dig against Christine Brackin who picked up Jos' timing and kept ahead by 1 or 2 points with Jos' drawing level then dropping behind again. A change of tactics on in the final part and some close quarters hits saw Jos draw level again. After that her accuracy returned (including a change of weapon when a clear strike failed to register) and it was Jos turn to draw clear.

Men's Epee: Phil 6th Wayne 22nd from 46

A good round of poules for Phil saw him placed a healthy 8th and Wayne a good 18th.

Because of refing I saw little of the early rounds but Wayne went out in the 32 and this is a fine performance against so many experienced fencers at such an early stage in his career.

Fortunately, I was able to se Phil's fight against his former nemesis Chris Green in the L16. In a devastating display of technical and tactical skills Phil produced the best fight of his career. He was quickly 6-3 down and it could have gone pear-shaped, but Phil did so well to settle and slow it down. He concentrated on one hit at a time and at the end of the first break found himself 8-7 up. Another change of tactics and some beautifully executed wrist hits opened the gap. A return to his former tactics, at the point at which his opponent had abandoned his defence to them, to avoid the wrist hits, saw his opponent psychologically beaten - smashing his weapon on the ground in frustration.  Phil kept it tight and mixed it up to pull off his first win against Chris relatively comfortably, in the end.  in the Quarter finals Phil went down to the eventual winner, Jeremy Raj. Well done Phil.

Bill Hoskyns Open Epee 2005 A long and tiring day (2 rounds of pools and a repecharge system) saw Jon and Phillip finish 14th and 17th from 82. A really good performance from both fencers. Well done

Overall the were 12 Gold medals to win and Salle Rose won Three. (Women's Foil, Women's Epee and Men's Team Epee.)

We also got two 2nd places Women's Team Epee and Men's Individual.

These results and these of the Youth Championships (Alysia, Ellie and Mark) helped to put Salle Rose in 3rd place in the club rankings (from 46). Not bad for a one weapon Club?

Regional Individual Championships 2004

Men's Epee                  Jon 1st

Women's Epee              Jos 1st  Heather 2nd

Women's Foil               Jos 2nd

Southcombe Cup Inter-Region Championships Jon, Jos and Heather were selected to fence (although Heather was unavailable) and Barry was the team Referee.  They all fenced well and won promotion from the 2nd Division to the 1st. Well Done
Birmingham International Open Only Jon, here, all alone . He improved on the 35th and 37th of the two previous years to make it to the last 32. He he met ' ...a big German...' who proved to be Beiler who went on to be 3rd. Jon 26 from 154.
Invicta Open A full team went to this, with Jason of Ipswich also part of our team, it was 3 carfuls. At the end of the first round of men's we had 1st and 7th seeds (from 104).Jon followed this through until he met his nemesis in the shape of Howard West (too often this is the case ). Howard was not as his best - suffering from Flu - but had made it to the last 8. Howard slowed the fight down, by wiping his nose, checking his weapons, etc enough to unsettle Jon who went down 15 - 14 (having got to 14 - 13). Good job I wasn't ref'ing. As Howard said to me (having observed my ill humour) ' If you were ref'ing boyo I've had lost 15 -1' I wonder where he would have got the 1? Jon 5th another excellent result.

Christiaan so easily overcame his first opponent that he was not really ready for stiffer opposition in the L64 and went out to be 33rd from 104.

Jos and Heather did their usual double act here only instead of 1v2 it was 2 v 14. Heather finished 12th, Jos 3rd but that was the best match of the day. Ellie continued to improve and this time hit everyone in her poule. She eventually finished 30th then entered the plate where she finished 3rd. A brilliant Day Thanks all.

London Cup

'A' Grade

So the big day dawned and Jon (eventually) arrived with just time for a warm up lesson before I had to become a ref. It went well and I had a feeling that Jon was up for it.

I had the fortune to be refing on the poule adjacent to Jon and with a trainee ref to supervise it meant I could watch some of his fights. His first was against the other Brit in the Poule (seeded British no 1, Greg Allen). Greg must have thought that at least he could count on this as a win under his belt needing 3 from 6 to sure of being promoted. Jon took the fight to him and scored the first hit and then hung on to that 1 hit lead to win 4-3. He once again showed maturity, as in the Aldershot fight with Matt, to slow down Greg who is generally very rapid to finish. He also beat a useful Chinese an one other that I did not see to finish with 4 wins from 6 and a good indicator. In the later bit of the day he fought a lower seed fencer in the L96 and won 15 -11. I was ref'ing at the time and did not see but was confident he could win if he let go of the nerves.

So Jon became one of the few Brits to make it the Sunday and the L64. I don't remember anyone else making the second day on their first go in recent years. So on the Sunday Jon had match with Robatsch of Austria - at that time ranked 7th in the world. It was a great fight. It was a typical Epee bout , both fencers slowly probing defences and testing reactions. They matched hit for hit in the first three minutes to be at 2 - 2. The second 3 minutes also went the same way 4 - 4 at the end. Robatsch up'd the tempo and Jon responded. At 8 minutes it was7 - 7. and Robatsch struck for 8 -7. Jon had to go for it with only 1 minute left, as Robatsch knew, and a n exciting fight finished about 13 9. But what a weekend Well done Jon, Salle Rose pride.

Slough Open By February Jon had reach 27th in the rankings and need to climb two places higher to be sure of a place in the London 'A' grade. This was the last chance. Having finished 19th from 129 in 2002 there seemed a good chance but as luck would have it he finished 36th from 147 (I wasn't able to be there so am not in a position to comment). How ever the competition was very strong and others did not do so well and this combined with his Aldershot result left him at 26th on the 1st of march, and with one senior fencer not wanting to compete Jon had Qualified for the A grade.
Aldershot Open

Jon entered this to strengthen his position in the rankings to hold onto 24th place to be able to enter the London Cup 'A' grade. Normally a small competition of 40. It seems that this year lots of others had the same idea and it was a strong competition of 100.

Jon fenced like a dream in the poule to win all his fights. He fought the most difficult fight (against Matt Haynes) well. After getting the first hit Jon held onto the 1 - 0 lead until about 7 seconds before the end when he was caught. Despite losing the advantage for the extra minute (Jon had to score to win, Matt had only to avoid being hit to win) he bravely attacked Matt and hit him on the leg. He held his nerve in the other fights to finish the poule round as 2nd seed. There was a very long break between the poules and the 128 but he warmed up well to win the 128 comfortably (as he should have).  Jon had a loss of nerve and tensed up in the 64 when fencing a junior (who he believed he ought to beat, and thereby put extra pressure on himself). This slightest of tension meant that he did not quite flow or react as smoothly and quickly as usual, and he was unlucky to go down 14 -15, and finish 18th. Nevertheless, a result of this order, in this company, would have been unbelievable earlier in the season and is still fantastic. Overall the results for the men over January mean that Jon will certainly be in the top 30 and should be in the London Cup, direct or as a reserve. Good Luck

Cambridge Winter Tournament 2004

A fine performance from Jos, Heather and Elli. After the first round Jos was placed 3rd (4V-1D), Heather 10th ( 3V-1D) and Eli 18th from 19. I was pleased again with Elli's intelligent approach to the poule round. She managed to keep the hits against her down to improve her results. She is really adapting to fence the seniors well, and in a few seasons will be able to turn the tables. Heather fenced well and got her epee together, and Jos only slipped up once, losing 5-4.

The L16DE went well, With Elli getting 9 hits from the 15th seed before going down. Heather fenced the 7th seed and produced a power display of hits to wrist and body to win this and take over the 7th place and Jos fought a restrained fight to easily hold her place. Heather now faced the number 2 seed and again produced a good display of epee ( particularly 6 pickup) to again overpower the high seed. Jos also had a good opponent to beat to hold on to her place and worked well to a victory. Jos and Heather were now 2nd and 3rd and faced each other in super semi-final. It was a lovely fight to watch with a variety of strokes, and all the piste being used. Jos won this energetic display and Heather showed she has really settled into epee now.

Jos narrowly lost the final (15-14) but enjoyed her day and we hope to see her at the club in training more often this year

2004
Hereford and Worcester Open

Jon achieved his best ever result in this competition . This is another of the  'big seven' competitions in the country. He made 12th from 154, the competition is limited to 154 by the size of the hall.

He fought another super round of pools - again beating the only fencer in the pool ranked higher than him (5-2), but getting careless in his fifth fight to go down 5-4. He was ranked 28th after this round with 5 wins from 6. He then fenced coolly and tactically - not being afraid to take the initiative, as sometimes happens in the early rounds of the knockout against weaker opposition. He held on to his placing until the L32 round without ever going behind. In the difficult fight with the, by then, 5th seed (whom Jon had never previously beaten),  he also came out on the attack and pinned him back to take over and win the fight strongly I think 15-11. He may even have been ahead the whole time here but I will have to confirm that again with Jon at Christmas.

This put him into the L16 with the 12th seed. I missed much of the fight having to go back to my car to get some spare weapons as the prolonged fighting had taken Jon down to his last weapon (out of 3). The others only needed minor adjustments but with the ref'ing l there was no time. Competition fencers take note - as you get better you need more weapons, as the springs take a bashing as you hit more times and need adjusting. I saw the last few hits and it was a good fight finishing with Jon going down 15 -13, 2 hits short of a medal but with a fine 12th place

Well done indeed.

Eastern Region National Age Group Championships Ellie won this in fine style (pictures on the Salle Rose in Action page). Mixed in with the U16 Ellie (from the U14 had a good day, beating the eventual silver medallist in the U16 and only loosing in the extra minute to the U16 champion. In the final of the U14 she finished the first 3 minute period to go 4 - 3 up and let her opponent try to seize the initiative. this was a tactically wise move and her opponent froze long enough for the referee to call passivity. In the final period her opponent was forced to try to attack and Ellie defended strongly to win 15 -5 allowing her opponent no clear chances and conceding only two hits as doubles. A very mature performance, showing the experience she has gained from the senior competitions.
Welsh Open Unfortunately  I could not be with Jon, but a fine 6 out of 6 set him up for a position in the L32 and he fought well to make that round and beat a higher seed to make the L16. At 13-12 up with 2 seconds to go Jon ran back thinking he was clear but those seconds seem to last a long time - at least long enough for his opponent to level the score. As is so often the case the opponent then went on to score the deciding hit in the extra minute. Still a great result in a strong competition - Jon's best yet
Bristol Open A superb performance from Jon saw him 6th seed after the pools, from 180. Sadly, a combination of problems with body wires and spool saw him go out in a fight he should easily have have won to finish 65th. This is a result that we would have been pleased with  a year ago and shows how far Jon has come.
Essex Open Jon continued the beginning of the new season where he left off the old and an excellent poule round saw him in 47th place. He fought his last 64 match with great maturity against Srishkandrajah. He gradually built a 9-6 lead only to have it cut back to 9-9. After the minute break he showed skill courage and speed to rebuild his lead to beat the 28th seed 15 -12. In the last 32 he met Tristan Lane - who is a member of the GB team for the forthcoming World championships. Jon put up a fine performance this time going down 15 - 12. He finished in 28th place from 128, well done.

Gavin had a superb Poule, winning three of his 6 fights (and beating an old rival) and was placed near the middle of the tableau. Gavin had a 12 - 9 lead against the experienced Steve Brakin.  He went in for a quick kill, but as is often the case with a fencer in this situation, took to big a risk and was overtaken. Still a fine result at 76th and his best yet. Well done.

Elli was in her first Senior competition but was not overawed and almost took a fight in the poule, going 4 - 4 and only getting hit in the 'extra minute'. Elli finished 63 from 65, so well done.

Dutch Championships Jos made 5th in the Epee individual and her team was 2nd. She  made 3rd in the sabre individual and also was 2nd in the team Sabre!!
Norfolk Open Jos fought a great series of fights in the two pool rounds, receiving only 5 hits in 10 fights. She then showed what a good fencer she is barely conceding any hits throughout the whole competition.

Philip and Reg, meanwhile were enjoying themselves in the men's. Phil made 4 victories from 6 on the pool to leave him as  22nd seed for the  DE stage. An excellent series of fights culminated in his beating the 11th seed in the L32 to finish an eventual 15th - Brilliant. Reg managed to hit everyone and lose only 5-4 in some of his pool fights. He was placed 51 from 53. he also entered the plate and had  3 4/5 losses and one victory to finish 8th from 12, and gained some friends on the way. WELL DONE ALL. The only sad side was that work commitments prevented Heather, Jon and James from defending the places they gained the previous year.

British Senior Championships 2003 Heather fought a fantastic pool to come away with 5 wins from 6 and 1 defeat against the eventual 3rd placed fencer, by  4-3. This outstanding effort found her in 13th going into the Last 128. She won her L128 comfortably, but tired in the middle 3 mins of the L64 ,and although she was catching up by the end could not win this fight. Nevertheless this is way her best result yet. Well done.

Miller Hallett

London Men's Open Epee.

Jon gained his best result in an open of this quality , finishing 26th (from 102).  He fenced a mature an well controlled series of fights and went out to the eventual winner (Marik Stepien).

Philip finished  89th

Eastern Region Individual Championships 2003 Superb Individual Performances happened this weekend despite work commitments keeping away James and Heather

Women's Foil      Jos        1st

Women's Epee     Jos        1st

Men's Epee          Jon        1st

Fantastic !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Excellent performance also from Reg, in his first individual competition, to win two pool fights and finish 18th

Invicta Open Well done to Jos, 1st (again), and Heather, 6th, knocked out by Jos - again?
Eastern Region Team Championships 2003

With 11 teams the Championships were as strong as ever and, after the 1st round pools, Team 'A' (Jon, Jos and Christiaan) were placed 1st after an excellent performance. Their first round opponents (all well beaten) included Colchester (CaDs) who by a quirk of fate they met in the Semi-finals. This time CaDs were careful not to lets us romp away and an excellent tactical battle was fought. At the stage of the last three encounters  each of the CaDs fencers fought an extremely controlled and well pumped up fight and were winners. Unfortunately they had shot their bolt in this match, and were beaten by a good Cambridge squad. Salle Rose had to content themselves with 3rd place knowing that there were 3 fine teams in the finals, and this was not to be their year. Nevertheless they all to be congratulated for their efforts, skill and sportsmanship as are Gavin and Reg who had less success but as much fun in the B squad.

Gavin, Reg, Christiaan, Jos Heather and Ellie also successfully fought as the Suffolk Epee squad in their fine victory over Norfolk.

Birmingham international Open Heather fought excellently in the pools to score 3 victories from 5. She scored; 5 -1, 5 - 0, 5 -1, 2 -3, 4 -5, and was seeded 19th from 60. In the L64 DE Heather suffered a bout of nerves when 10 -8 up with 30 seconds to go and her opponent got 2 hits. With 5 seconds to go she scored a lovely wrist touch but the referee missed it completely and failed to award it. In the extra minute the nerves retuned and she failed to gain the needed touch. Nevertheless this years 35th place was a considerable improvement on 2002's 53rd place - Well Done.

Jon and Philip also entered but were very late, having got lost in Birmingham and, understandably did not really settle in quite quickly enough. Jon manage 3 victories from 6 and should still be pleased with his 52nd place, from 120. Phil was 113 but only just lost his DE128 fight 13 - 15 in what would have been the upset of the competition. Well done to you all.

Winton Cup Jon and Jos fenced for the Eastern Regional Team. Jos was the region's most successful fencer with 17 victories from 18 in Epee and 6 from 9 in the Sabre. Jon also fought well with 13 victories from 18 . Barry refereed.
Invicta Open Superb results from Invicta Open. Jos 1st, Heather 6th, (knocked out by Jos, again) from 30. What a great result! Jon 14th and Christiaan 62nd in his first open, from 90ish, equally outstanding. Well done to you all, you make us proud.
Ipswich Cup 'A' Grade

Well done to Heather. Fencing for Great Britain in her first international, Heather gained one victory and two 5-4 defeats in her first 'A' grade competition. She started as 64th seed and finished 60th which is excellent, one more hit in either of her 5 -4 matches would have seen her through to the second day and gaining world ranking points. A great experience for her.

Thanks also to all those who helped by driving, or scoring and time-keeping.

The weekend was also a success for me as I refereed the final.

 Well done Salle Rose.

British Youth Championships,  U14s. Ellie got a great result in only her 2nd competition, 17th from 27.  Ellie quickly got into the competition and won the last bout in her first poule 5-1. Although her only previous competition experience had been the regional Championships, where there was only 1 opponent, Ellie fenced very maturely. In her second poule she beat an opponent whom she had lost to in the first round and won a further fight. Not only did she fence well, she also made some new friends. WELL DONE ELLIE.
Slough Open

An excellent L32 from Jon, 19th from 130, well done. A splendid improvement on 2002's 58th.

Jos and Heather, an average day, Jos 18th Heather  about 34th both slightly down on 2002.

Cambridge Winter Tournament January 2003

Outstanding result from James 6th (from 41),One of our best ever results.

Jos 2nd Heather 9th (from 18)

2003
Commonwealth Fencing Championships Australia Barry refereed semi final of men's and women's team events
Leicester Jos 3rd (from 83) Well done indeed , some great matches won, Heather 58th - first points from a major open which also happened to be probably the largest ever?
St. Niklaas Belgium Jos 9th from 40.

Jon 54th from 140 a super performance.

Eastern Region Youth Championships U14, & U18 Elli, in her first competition, had only one opponent, in a close fight she showed courage and skill. At one point she was 11-9 down and looked like catching up but was eventually beaten 15 - 9, a promising start.

Kate also had only one other competitor in her age group. It was a close first three minutes at 6 - 6, but then Kate settled and some well timed actions saw her win 15 - 7, very impressive.

British U 20/17 Championships Jon 22nd from 80, lost on priority in extra minute in L32. So close?
Leicester Open Jos continued her return to form with a 3rd place from 83; a superb result! This time she did it the hard way. After a slow start in which she had only three wins from a possible six in the preliminary round and she was seeded 38th. However a string of fine performances took her past the British 5th 6th and 7th ranked fencers (some of whom she has not beaten for a few years?) to be stopped in a super close fight (15 13) by Georgina Usher (British No1 ) for  3rd place.

Heather also showed excellent form winning two of her preliminary round fights to be placed 58th. She held onto this in the 128 round by beating the experienced Sylvia Brown 15 - 5 to score her first L64 and her first ranking points in a major open. Well Done.

Bristol Open Jos showed excellent form to be 1st after the pools (winning all her fights) and finished 5th from 90
Essex Open  Jos, beginning a return to form, came a good 9th from 55.
British Championships  2002 Jon got his best ever result and finished 32nd. from 160 fencers.  A slow start left him at a lowly 115th seed but in the L128 he defeated the 18th seed (Eastern Region Captain Steve Domec) to take over his place. Jon convincingly won the L64 fight. In the L32 Jon encountered Quinton Berryman who beat him and went on to win the championship. This result put Join in 64th for the  Seniors and 4th ranked in the Juniors. EXCELLENT.
Cambridge Open Air A cold July day saw Jos score some superb victories over the men to reach the final in this mixed event. At 13 all she succumbed to cramp to lose to Hugo Veryzer.

Gavin also did very well to reach the L32.

Eastern Region Individual Champs 2002

A superb performance from all our fencers. All those who took part improved on last year's results.

Highlights

Jon Ainsley             Winner              Men's Epee

Jos Hofmans-Clark   Winner             Women's Epee

Heather Jarrold       2nd                  Women's Epee

Jos Hofmans-Clark   3rd                  Women's Foil

James Lee               3rd                    U16 Epee

These results combined to place us third in the club competition. Considering we only do the one weapon this was an excellent result again?

Eastern Region Team Champs 2002 Salle Rose 'A'

With Christiaan in his first competition, Jon seriously unwell and Jos acting as man for the day it did not look promising. After the seeding rounds they had moved from and initial 4th seeding to second place with 100% wins and an indicator of + 47 to Huntingdon's + 48. They won their L8 fight easily against Chelmsford 'B' but were pitched against Cambridge A in the semi's and after a close series of matches were tied at 44 all. Jon pulled out a memorable hit on Steve Domec and they were through to the final. Huntingdon had had an easier semi and it was a close match until Jos gave Jon a 40 - 37 lead going into the last match. Jon held on to it to take the team to their first gold medal.

Salle Rose 'B'

Phil, Gavin and Heather were seeded 7th (on previous years results) from 10 at the start and had a tough match against Chelmsford A. In the second round they beat their opponents and moved up to 6th. They were unable to hold off the challenge of Cambridge A  (who went on to give our A team a close match) in the last 8 and finished an excellent 6th - ahead of all the other B teams.

An excellent performance from both teams well done.

Birmingham International Well done Jon 34th, in Birmingham International from 148. Now ranked 82nd in Seniors
Invicta  Jos 1st Heather 7th (met in Quarter final)
Merseyside Kate 14th. I have yet to get an update on this one
Slough Unfortunately I was unable to be present but excellent fencing from Jos produced a 6th and Kate and Heather  were on performance targets finishing 22nd and 27th.

Jon was also in the points with a 58th.            Well done all.

Cambridge Winter 2002 Super start to 2002 Jos and heather 1st and 2nd.

Jon and James 9th and 10th. Jon and James handled the poules really well, being 2nd and 5th after the first two rounds. Outstanding.

2002
Hereford & Worcester 2001 Jon, Jos and Kate all showed their best form. Jon won four of 6 poule fights but was still outside the top 64 the field was so large. He put in a very strong L128 to get into the Top 64. Here he drew Howard West (a very experienced fencer who was 7th seed). An outstanding match saw Jon at 13 all with 10 seconds to go but his nerve cracked and he launched  a do or die attack (and died?). With this experience next time I think he'll win. still. a L64 (actually place 58) in a major a grade is a super result.

Jos returned to form and was 12th after the poules and finished 8th to Olympic pentathelete, Kate Allenby.

Kate also had a super day and finished 24th with some well fought matches.

St  Niklaas A super start from Jon with 4 victories from 6 in the pool. Jon won his matches very convincingly in 128 and 96 rounds. Finally went out to Lothie (Finland) who finished 6th.

A strong start too from Jos winning 5 from 6 in the pools. Dogged by weapon and wire problems Jos used up more energy than she would have liked in the early DE fights and lost 15 - 13 in the L16.
